Our journey to a greener tomorrow

06 JUNE 2022

As a business that depends on natural resources, we take an active approach to reduce our environmental impact. Now, we are accelerating our pace as we build A Better Tomorrow™ with sustainability at its core.

We have targets to achieve carbon neutrality across our operations by 2030 (Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas emissions), and to be net zero across our value chain by 2050 (Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions). These ambitions are supported by a range of targets covering energy, waste, water and biodiversity. Across the Group, we are making strides towards a greener tomorrow and decarbonising our business operations.

In 2021, we signed up to the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign, which aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. We also became a signatory to Business for Nature’s Call to Action, with its focus on collective action to reverse nature loss.

Our products are intrinsically linked to our sustainability ambitions and Vuse can proudly call itself the first global, independently certified, carbon neutral vaping brand.†

Our carbon neutral journey

Achieving carbon neutrality across our own sites is an important step to deliver on our environmental sustainability goals, and BAT now has 18 certified carbon neutral sites around the world‡. The certification process carried out independently at each site is based on detailed requirements on carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions quantification, reduction and offsetting. Achieving carbon neutral certification requires robust ongoing decarbonisation plans and a commitment to continued emissions reduction. This achievement is a result of site-level teams working with technology and adopting processes and practices to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.

As our Chief Executive Jack Bowles says in our 2021 ESG report,: “We all have a responsibility to protect our planet, while delivering a positive social impact. Business can and must embrace the values of a green economy and continue to accelerate progress towards a sustainable future. By working together, we can help develop solutions to bring about lasting change and create A Better Tomorrow for all.”

This estimate will be reconciled at year-end, with further offsetting obtained if required.

‡ Carbon neutrality relates to Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, achieved by a combination of initiatives, including energy efficiency, emissions reduction, renewable energy use, the purchase of renewable energy certificates and offsetting.
